Drenthe, day 1

Hi there,
Today, on our first real day in Drenthe, we visited "kamp Westerbork" (The Westerbork transit camp). I came to learn that its function during the WOII was to assemble Romani and Dutch Jews for transport to other Nazi concentration camps. In total there were 107.000 Jews, Romani and Sinti deported to Bergen Belsen and Auschwitz.
We also took a lovely walking path through the forest, leading us to the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). This is an impressive aperture synthesis interferometer near camp Westerbork. It consists of a linear array (which makes it even more impressive!) of 14 antennas with a diameter of 25 metres.
Westerbork (Camp Westerbork as well as the WSRT) was a very interesting place to be for me as a Dutch Lit student, because the setting of "De ontdekking van de Hemel" (The Discovery of Heaven"), takes place here. This book was written by one of my favorite authors, Harry Mulisch.
Thank you for reading and I hope you come by soon for more travelling news!
Lisa
